Why do people not want to do Mental Health First Aid?

Too much to learn

The Mental Health First Aid course is comprehensive and covers a lot of content, which can be daunting to some.

Blurred lines

The role of a Mental Health First Aider is complex, they have to respond, but they also need to identify and intervene and they also need to influence the culture. This is effectively taking on multiple roles that may leave them overwhelmed, confused or inefficient. Therefore, it is easier to avoid it.

Responsibility

Being a Mental Health First Aider involves a lot of perceived responsibility for the mental health of others, especially if they have an mental health illness.

Unwillingness

Staff who do not feel confident, feel confused or overwhelmed by the requirements may not be willing to assist to someone in distress as readily.

Loss of skills

Just like with first aid, unless people are using the skills regularly then there is a drop off. People may be worried that they’ll forget and then not know what to do.

Fear

Concern about the responsibility that comes with the role and not wanting to do or say the wrong thing.

Quite simply they are scared...

What you may not know...

Is that there is an alternative…

Something that is less intense…

Something that is clearer…

Something that is less demanding…

Mental Health First Responder

A Mental Health First Responder is to Mental Health First Aid the same as Emergency Aid is to First Aid at Work. They are there to provide an initial response to a crisis or someone in distress.

A few key facts

Definition: A Mental Health First Responder is someone who is trained to provide an initial response to someone in crisis or distress. They are trained to identify immediate actions that will support the individual to cope and keep them and those around them safe, this may involve requesting support from agencies or services, signposting an individual to support, or getting support from others in the organisation.

Who the course is for: The Mental Health First Responder course is designed to be suitable for managers, first aiders and employees who would like to know how to support someone in distress. Participants do not need a background in HR, healthcare, or mental health to benefit from this training.

Aim of the course: The Mental Health First Responder course aims to give people a structure to help others in crisis or distress.

How is it different from Mental Health First Aid: Unlike Mental Health First Aid, a Mental Health First Responder’s role is to respond to an emergency situation. They are not expected to spot the early signs of mental health illnesses and provide interventions as a Mental Health First Aider, that is the role of pastoral support systems, such as effective line management.

Outcomes: You will have a member of staff who is certified to provide support to someone who is in crisis or distress, just the same as a first aider is trained to respond to an emergency situation.

Guarantee: This course is covered by our Willingness Guarantee, that means a full refund if someone is not more willing to help in a crisis after the course, click here for more info.
