Support for risk assessing mental health for experienced Health and Safety professionals. This online course is designed for people experienced in completing risk assessments to familiarise themselves with risk assessing mental health.

If you are like many health and safety professionals you have an excellent understanding of physical hazards and managing risks in your work. However, expectations are changing and suddenly Health and Safety Departments have found themselves with a legal responsibility for the mental health of staff. This is something that traditional approaches to risk assessment haven’t considered and this highlights the Health and Safety Gap…

The Health and Safety Gap

Expectations have increased about the need for employers to risk assess and reduce the likelihood of staff experiencing mental health difficulties. With the US Department of Labor and the UK’s Health and Safety Executive taking more interest in how employers are reducing these risks it is vital that those with Health and Safety responsibilities act now.

However, risk assessing mental health can be seen as complex, with so many variables and ultimately the fact that mental health difficulties are different at an individual level.

Health and safety training historically has not covered mental health and it can feel overwhelming to try and systemise such a complex system. Factors like interpersonal relationships, job demands, support from managers, role clarity or change all play a part. Add to that people’s wellbeing being affected by how much control they feel they have in their role, risk assessing mental health is complex.

Provision normally handled by HR, OD or L&D teams come into the remit of Health and Safety departments as part of controlling the workplace mental health risks.

This leads to a Health and Safety gap, where those risk assessing mental health are not historically skilled in meeting the mental health needs of staff.

We’ve worked with Health and Safety professionals to understand this gap and develop this online course to help with risk assessing mental health.
