Support for those new to risk assessing mental health as part of a organisation-wide risk assessment. This online course is designed for people with little or no familiarity in completing risk assessments.
Undertaking risk assessments for mental health can be daunting, especially if you are not familiar with the process.
However, there is a legal responsibility on employers to risk assess your business for the mental health and wellbeing of staff. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive, the body who oversee this legal responsibility, state very clearly that employers have a legal duty to risk assessment mental health and act on it. This legal responsibility exists in many countries, New Zealand has WorkSafe, Australia Safe Work, the US Department of Labor and so on. This legal duty is universal and yet so many organisations are have a gap.
As an employer all is well and good, until you hit the Health and Safety Mental Health Gap…
The Health and Safety Mental Health Gap
Expectations have increased about the need for employers to risk assess and reduce the likelihood of staff experiencing mental health difficulties. At the same time, the number of staff experiencing poor wellbeing has also increased.
Risk assessing mental health can be seen as complex, with so many variables and ultimately the fact that mental health difficulties are different at an individual level.
Health and safety training historically has not covered mental health and it can feel overwhelming to try and systemise such a complex system. Factors like interpersonal relationships, job demands, support from managers, role clarity or change all play a part. Add to that people’s wellbeing being affected by how much control they feel they have in their role, risk assessing mental health is complex.
This leads to a Health and Safety gap, where those risk assessing mental health are not historically skilled in meeting the mental health needs of staff.
We’ve worked with employers to understand how this gap affects them and develop this online course to help with risk assessing mental health.
